Dhammapada
These are based on a translation by Acharya Buddharakkhita
5. Hatred is never removed by hatred in this world. By non-hatred alone is hatred removed. This is a law eternal.
17. The evil-doer suffers here and hereafter; he suffers in both the worlds. The thought, “Evil have I done,” torments him, and he suffers even more when gone to lower worlds.
18. The doer of good delights here and hereafter; he delights in both the worlds. The thought, “Good have I done,” delights him, and he delights even more when gone to realms of bliss.
25. By effort and heedfulness, discipline and self-mastery, let the wise one make for himself an island which no flood can overwhelm.
35. Wonderful, indeed, it is to subdue the mind, so difficult to subdue, ever swift, and seizing whatever it desires. A tamed mind brings happiness.
42. Whatever harm an enemy may do to an enemy, or a hater to a hater, an ill-directed mind inflicts on oneself a greater harm.
53. As from a great heap of flowers many garlands can be made, even so should many good deeds be done by one born a human.
55. Of all the fragrances—sandal, valerian, blue lotus and jasmine—the fragrance of virtue is the sweetest.
56. Faint is the fragrance of valerian and sandal, but excellent is the fragrance of the virtuous, wafting even amongst the gods.
58-59. Upon a heap of rubbish in the road-side ditch blooms a lotus, fragrant and pleasing. Even so, on the rubbish heap of blinded mortals the disciple of the Supremely Enlightened One shines resplendent in wisdom.
63. A fool who knows his foolishness is wise at least to that extent, but a fool who thinks himself wise is a fool indeed.
65. Though only for a moment a discerning person associates with a wise man, quickly he understands the Truth, just as the tongue tastes the flavor of the soup.
68. Well done is that action of doing which one regrets not later, and the fruit of which one experiences with delight and happiness.
76. Should one find a person who points out faults and who corrects, let one follow such a wise and sagacious person as one would a guide to hidden treasure. It is always better, and never worse, to cultivate such an association.
78. Do not associate with evil companions; do not seek the fellowship of the vile. Associate with the good friends; seek the fellowship of noble ones.
79. He who drinks deep the Dhamma lives happily with a tranquil mind. The wise always delight in the Dhamma made known by the Noble One, the Buddha.
82. On hearing the Teachings, the wise become perfectly purified, like a lake deep, clear and still.
100. Better than a thousand useless words is one useful word, hearing which one attains peace.
101. Better than a thousand useless verses is one useful verse, hearing which one attains peace.
102. Better than reciting a hundred meaningless verses is the reciting of one verse of Dhamma, hearing which one attains peace.
103. Though one may conquer a thousand times a thousand men in battle, yet he indeed is the noblest victor who conquers himself.

The verse of Arahant Kaṅkhārevata
- There is a person who can remove the doubt of the people who go to him. He is the Buddha. See the excellent wisdom of the Buddhas! It is like a fire blazing at midnight. That wisdom gives beings bright knowledge and the eye of the Dhamma.
This verse was said by Arahant Kaṅkhārevata.
The verse of Arahant Puṇṇa
- One should only associate with wise, superior people who show the way to goodness. Their understanding is extremely subtle. They practice the Dhamma heedfully. These wise, superior people have realized the deepest meaning of life – the Four Noble Truths that are profound, subtle and hard to understand.
This verse was said by Arahant Puṇṇa.
The verse of Arahant Kuṇdala
- Irrigators can lead water to wherever they need. Arrow makers can bend the arrows as they wish. Carpenters can bend wood as they wish. In this same way, superior people can tame themselves as they wish.
This verse was said by Arahant Kuṇdala.
The verse of Arahant Puṇṇa
- Virtue is a great thing in this Dhamma path. But the greatest thing is developed wisdom. Through one’s virtue and wisdom, one can achieve victory among humans and gods.
This verse was said by Arahant Puṇṇa.
The verse of Arahant Vacchapāla
- One should always associate with noble people who are wise, humble, full of good qualities, and have realized the Noble Truths with a very subtle and skilled understanding. It’s not difficult for someone to attain Nibbāna if one associates with such noble people.
This verse was said by Arahant Vacchapāla.
The verse of Arahant Susārada
- How wonderful is the sight of great noble people whose minds are well established in the Dhamma! As a result of that association, one’s doubt is removed and wisdom is developed. That association can even make a fool become wise. Therefore association with superior people is always great.
This verse was said by Arahant Susārada.
The verse of Arahant Khaṇḍasumana
- I offered just one flower. As a result I enjoyed heavenly happiness for eight hundred million years. Through the remainder of that merit, the fire of defilements has been extinguished by me.

The verses of Arahant Heraññakāni
- Days and nights pass by very quickly. Life will come to an end very soon. The lives of people are reaching an end like the water of small streams.
- But foolish evil doers don’t understand this. In the end, they will have to suffer. Truly the result of evil action is also very evil.
These verses were said by Arahant Heraññakāni.
The verses of Arahant Somamitta
- Just as one climbing on to a small piece of wood would sink in the great ocean, even so one who lives a virtuous life sinks in saṁsāra if he associates with a lazy person. Therefore one should avoid those who are lazy and have little energy.
- There are wise noble ones who meditate in solitary places, practise the Dhamma with great effort, develop Jhānas, and strive all the time energetically. One should associate with such wise ones.
These verses were said by Arahant Somamitta.
