Understanding your Stats
If you care about spreading the Supreme Buddha’s Dhamma in the west, you should care about your website stats. By looking at your stats you can answer these questions:
- How are people finding your website?
- What are the top pages people look at?
- Where do the visitors to the website come from?
- How many people are looking at the website from their smartphone?
Page Views vs. Visitors, Time on page, bounce rate
Page views is a count of every single page that was looked at each time. Visitors, is number of people looking. So you may have one visitor that looks at 20 pages. Or you may have twenty visitors that only look at one page.
Average time on page is the amount of time people spent looking at each page, on average. Here you see that people spent more than a minute and a half. In internet-browsing time, that’s alot.
Bounce rate is how quickly people leave (bounce) off of the site.
Top Pages
The Top Pages of your stats shows how many views there were on each page
Where ever you see a single slash / that means your home page. So you can see that this month, the Saskatoon website had 1236 views to the home page. Notice that the second most viewed page is What to Expect. This shows you how important that page is. Photos ranks next. So think, “Do I have good photos? Do my photos have good captions so people can learn about the asapuwa that way?”
Pay close attention to these top 15-20 pages because this is what people look at most.
Acquisition
Acquisition tells you how people came to your site.
Organic Search are the people that came to the site by doing some kind of search, perhaps “Edmonton meditation” and found your website and clicked on the the link.
Direct are the people who either typed in your address or clicked on a bookmark.
Referral are people who were referred to your website by clicking on a link to your page on another website. For example, they clicked on the Winnipeg Asapuwa link on the Toronto website.
Social are people who came through a link on facebook, meetup, instagram, twitter, etc.
Paid search are people who clicked on an ad to get to your site. You can learn more about these through your google adwords account.
There is usually a section that lists the top pages that link to you. Above we can see how important the links from meetup and facebook are. As well, we can see that people are also comming from the local insight meditation group.
Location
You can also see where people are from.
Browser
One very important piece of information is what kind of device people are looking at your website with.
Here you can see that over a third of visitors viewed this website on a phone or tablet. If your website doesn’t look good on phones, you will loose these people.
Other Behaviour
This table shows when people are looking at the site. The darker the block, the more page views.
You can see that Saturday afternoons, and Sunday evenings are high traffic times. This means that if you are going to make changes, try to do it before the weekend, because that’s when people are looking
